Word Origin

Anglo-Norman French, late 19th century

Why this word?

The origin of “trove” comes from the Anglo-Norman French phrase “tresor trové,” literally “found treasure.” In modern French, “tresor trové” still means “found treasure.” The French verb “trover” means “to find,” but in English, the noun “trove” means “a stash of valuables.” You may use the word “trove” by itself, but given the origin of the word, it makes sense to pair it with “treasure.”
