Word Origin

Latin, mid-16th century

Why this word?

The adjective “urban” describes things characteristic of a city, but add an “e” to the end of the word and the adjective becomes suave and sophisticated. “Urbane” is typically applied to men, and it describes a charming and refined demeanor.  In the 16th century, this courtly nature would have been found more in city dwellers than country folk, which can lead us to draw a connection between “urban” and “urbane.”
